Live Fashion Sketching for a Wedding at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO)

Recently, I had the pleasure of bringing live guest illustration to one of Toronto’s most iconic art and architectural landmarks: The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).
From the dramatic curves of Frank Gehry’s world-renowned architecture to the timeless elegance of surrounding fine art, sketching live guest portraits in this space was an unforgettable experience. Here’s a peek inside how live wedding sketching unfolds at high-profile venue like the AGO!
Act I: Cocktail Hour in Galleria Italia
The festivities began in Galleria Italia, the AGO’s breathtaking glass-and-wood promenade running along Dundas Street. As guests arrived for cocktail hour, they stepped into a space flooded with soft, natural light streaming through the soaring arc of Douglas fir timbers and floor-to-ceiling glass.
Setting up my drawing station in Galleria Italia felt like a dream. Surrounded by contemporary art installations and street views of Toronto, I captured guests dressed in their finest black-tie and editorial-style attire.
The Live Sketching Experience: In just 4 minutes per guest, I rendered loose, stylish fashion illustrations featuring their gowns, tailored suits, statement jewelry, and signature poses.
Guest Reactions: Guests loved watching their portraits come to life right before their eyes. It served as an instant icebreaker during cocktails!

Act II: The Reception Party in Walker Court
As the evening transitioned to dinner and dancing, the celebration moved into the heart of the AGO: Walker Court.
Walker Court is an architectural masterpiece. Anchored by Frank Gehry’s iconic, winding wood-and-glass spiral staircase rising toward the upper floors, the space bridges historic grandeur with cutting-edge modern design. Standing nearby are the monumental forms of the Henry Moore sculptures, adding an air of sculptor’s romance and artistic heritage to the party.
Moving the live sketching setup directly into Walker Court allowed me to stay right in the pulse of the party. While guests hit the dance floor or mingled near the bar, others dropped by my drawing desk to pose, chat about fashion, and pick up their custom illustrations.
